Compton House Hotel, Axbridge, Somerset, Mendip Hills

Compton House Hotel is a Grade II Listed Georgian country house offering bed and breakfast accommodation just a short walk from the historic Somerset town of Axbridge. Set on the edge of the Mendip Hills, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the property boasts stunning views across the Somerset Levels, making it a wonderful choice for both relaxation and exploration.

The hotel has five generous bedrooms, each with unique historic character, complemented by family furnishings to create a homely yet elegant atmosphere. The Elizabethan Room is the oldest, featuring a four-poster bed set into the original beams and a 1587 fireplace, along with a large private dressing room and claw-foot bath. The Panel Room is a romantic option, complete with intricate carvings, a four-poster bed and a roll-top bath raised on a wooden plinth, with sweeping views of the Somerset Levels. The South Room offers a light-filled space with a Queen-size sleigh bed and excellent views, though the steps to the shower may not suit all guests. The Fry Room, named after the Fry family who lived in the house during the 1700s, is compact and elegant with twin beds and shuttered windows overlooking Fry Hill. Finally, the Tilley Room, associated with the Tilley family of Tilley Lamp and cheese-making fame, is a bright double room with a large shower and views towards Axbridge.

Breakfast at Compton House is a highlight of any stay, featuring cereals, local yoghurts, juices, toast, croissants, and locally sourced sausage and bacon. Vegetarian and lighter options are also available, and guests are welcome to enjoy breakfast at a time that suits them, with complimentary tea and coffee served throughout the day.

For larger gatherings, the entire house can be hired on a self-catering basis. This includes seven bedrooms sleeping up to thirteen people, six bathrooms, two dining rooms, a sitting room, a TV room, a large kitchen and full use of the garden, making it ideal for family getaways, reunions or special celebrations.

Compton House is well positioned for those wishing to discover Somerset’s many attractions. Axbridge itself is a medieval town with roots in the Domesday Book, and nearby highlights include Cheddar Caves, the historic city of Wells, Bath, Glastonbury and Bristol. For those seeking activity and adventure, the area offers rock climbing, caving, cycling, horse riding, golf, paragliding, ballooning, go-karting and even dry ski slopes. Visitors can also enjoy Somerset’s crafts and carnivals, National Trust properties, and Bristol’s theatres and docks. Within walking distance of the hotel are two restaurants, providing convenience alongside the rich variety of experiences in the surrounding area.

Compton House Hotel blends historic charm with modern comfort, making it an excellent base for exploring Somerset or simply enjoying a restful stay in a beautiful setting.
