The Ancient Gatehouse Hotel, Wells, Somerset
The Ancient Gatehouse Hotel is located near the centre of Wells, the smallest city in England. For over 40 years, the hotel has provided comfortable and relaxing guest accommodation, excellent food, and wonderful views of the green and Wells Cathedral.
Recently refurbished, all guest rooms boast a modern and contemporary style full of charm and character. Each room includes en suite facilities, with some featuring four-poster beds and many offering views over Wells Cathedral Green and the famous west front of Wells Cathedral. One of the favourite guest rooms is situated in the Great West Gate House, now known as Browne’s Gate.
Designed and furnished by Laura Ashley, all guest rooms are equipped with digital flat-screen TVs, tea and coffee-making facilities, and complimentary mineral water sourced from Glastonbury or Cheddar’s Spring.
The hotel also houses Rugantinos restaurant, which is part of the Rossi and Rossi loyalty scheme. Members of this scheme receive monthly offers, discounts, and updates about the different dining and accommodation options available. Celebrating 40 years in the catering industry, Rugantinos at The Ancient Gatehouse Hotel has marked this milestone with a refurbishment to ensure the restaurant's appearance and ambience match the high quality of its food.
Within walking distance of the Cathedral, the Bishop's Palace & Gardens, and the city center, guests can easily explore the local area. A farmers market is held every Wednesday and Saturday, and there are various shops to browse, including both independent and high street names. Additionally, visitors can find charming spots to enjoy a cup of tea and a slice of cake.
