For many of us, one of the best things about going on
holiday is getting to spend time on the beach. Whether it’s building
sandcastles with the kids, taking a walk with the dog, or just sitting back
with a good book, there’s something about the beach that captivates us all.
However, many people are now choosing to stay at home and enjoy the beautiful
beaches of the UK & Ireland instead of venturing further afield. A recent
survey by Go Outdoors found that 4 out of 5 people find a staycation less stressful
than a holiday abroad, and isn’t the whole point of a holiday to leave your
worries behind? When you holiday closer to home you don’t have to worry about
forgetting your passport, or getting someone to look after your pets. You can
just pack up your car & the whole family can focus on having a great time!
If you think the beaches of the UK & Ireland can’t rival the ones you’d
find abroad, here are a few that we think could change your mind:
Scotland
Scotland is known across the world for its rugged landscapes,
with picturesque mountains and glens. You may be surprised to know that
Scotland is also home to beautiful, secluded beaches that wouldn’t look out of
place in the Caribbean! Okay, so the weather might not quite be as hot, but the
uncrowded white sands & turquoise seas more than make up for it.
Isle of Islay, Argyll, Bute & The Islands |
England
The English seaside may be known more for fish & chips
than picturesque sands, but if you look slightly off the beaten track you’ll be
amazed at what you find. Trip Advisor ranked the best beaches in the world for
2018, with Bournemouth Beach finishing top for the UK – and fifth for the whole
of Europe! The Jurassic Coast is a haven for archaeological finds, not to
mention some of the most beautiful & dog friendly beaches around.
Bournemouth, Dorset |
Northern Ireland
Much of Northern Ireland’s coastline is located in one of
two Areas of Outstanding Natural
Beauty. The Giant’s Causeway on the North Antrim
coast may be world famous, but the rest of the coast is full of hidden gems for
you to discover for yourself. Lots of hit films & TV shows have used the
Northern Irish coast as a backdrop, so eagle-eyed viewers may find a few
familiar spots too.
Portstewart, County Londonderry |
Ireland
Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way has something to offer everyone,
so whether you drive it from end to end or just dip in and out, the scenery
will stay with you forever. With over 75 Blue Flag beaches to discover, there
are plenty of places to sit back, relax, and take in the views. If you’re more
of an adrenaline seeker then you’ll be in your element too, with some world
class surfing to enjoy.
Barleycove Beach, County Cork |
Wales
It might not be the first place you think of for a beach
holiday, but in 2012 when the Wales Coastal Path opened, Lonely Planet named it as the top region to visit in
the world! The Pembrokeshire coastline is one of the cleanest & safest in
Britain, with the awards to prove it. More than just the beaches themselves,
the seaside towns of Wales are a delight to discover. The Victorian piers &
picturesque streets have a peaceful ambience that will make you want to return
time & time again.
St Catherine's Fort, Tenby, Pembrokeshire |
