Jamaica Inn, Bolventor, Launceston, Cornwall

Jamaica Inn, Bolventor, Launceston, Cornwall

The world famous Jamaica Inn high on Bodmin Moor.

This historic 1750’s coaching Inn was made famous by Daphne du Maurier’s novel of the same name and is now a 36-bedroom hotel and full of character. Its restaurant is open from 7.30am to 9pm and there’s a Smuggling Museum, the Daphne du Maurier Room, a Farm Shop, Gift Shop, gardens with a pirate ship for kids to climb on and breath-taking views over the wild and beautiful Bodmin Moor.

It is in the lovely Cornish hamlet of Bolventor half way between Launceston and Bodmin and welcomes children and dogs. As well as being a great place right by the A30 to stop for a meal on route into Cornwall it is also the perfect base to stay and to visit anywhere in Devon and Cornwall and still be back in time for dinner.

The hotel has romantic old bedrooms with 4-poster beds, modern rooms in the new part, family rooms, a fully equipped ‘disabled’ bedroom, dog-friendly rooms and also suites including the huge and luxurious Daphne du Maurier Suite with its 7’ Emperor bed, traditional bath, electric curtains etc. For bedrooms with the greatest views request a ‘Moor View’ room. All bedrooms have free fast Wi Fi and a big screen TV with Sky Sports, Sky Movies and even BT Sports channels. All guest rooms have been tastefully decorated and furnished, have en-suite bathrooms and are very comfortable with a choice of soft or hard pillows ensuring you get a good night’s sleep.

Breakfast for residents or visitors starts at 7.15, Light Bites and cream teas all day, lunch 12 noon to 3pm and dinner from 5pm to 9pm cooked to order from a large menu choice and is available in Pedlars Restaurant and the Smugglers Bar where well behaved dogs are welcome. Several real ales are always available as well as Cornish beers and lagers and the Inn’s own Jamaica Inn rum.

The Smuggling Museum is the largest in Cornwall and includes a short film of tales of wreckers, murderers and villains and the part the Inn played in the smuggling. Attached to the museum is the Daphne du Maurier Room filled with her personal memorabilia such as her Sheraton writing desk that she wrote many of her novels on.

The Gift Shop is packed with over 5000 items to choose from and the Inn’s new Farm Shop has fresh bread baked daily at the Inn and lots of Cornish produce.
