The Quay House offers unique accommodation, in a beautiful 200 former Harbour Master’s house dating back to C1820 in the historic town of Clifden in Co Galway. This quirky, elegant, one of kind bed and breakfast has been welcoming guests for over a century and is the perfect accommodation from which to explore this truly wonderful and majestic area.

The Quay House has been sensitively restored and now offers superb guest accommodation in fifteen, individually decorated guest rooms; each with full bathrooms, top quality orthopaedic beds and all but three overlooking the picturesque harbour below whilst the remaining 3 have scenic gardens views. We have a range of doubles, twins, family and triple rooms available and each room has been individually furnished with stunning vintage antiques and original paintings and several have working fireplaces. All have large bathrooms with tubs and showers and there is also one ground floor room for wheelchair users.

The interior of the guest house has been thoughtfully decorated in a unique and quirky style with wonderful decorative details throughout which help to create a superbly relaxing and restful atmosphere. There are two sitting rooms with open fires for the use of guests, comfortable furniture and a good selection of reading material and board games.

Breakfast is somewhat of an indulgent affair, served in our grand leafy conservatory with everything freshly prepared and cooked to order. We offer a varied choice of dishes including seafood, devilled kidneys, the ‘full Irish’, locally-smoked salmon, organic porridge, free-range eggs and farm cheeses. Our famous brown bread and fruit brack are both baked daily in the AGA and all breakfasts are served with freshly squeezed orange juice together with fresh fruits, organic muesli and yoghurt.

The Quay House stands right on the harbour, just 7 minutes walk from Clifden town centre. The town is known as the “Capital of Connemara” boasts a thriving tourism industry as its unique and picturesque setting between the foothills of the Twelve Bens and the Atlantic Ocean attracts thousands of visitors annually. Clifden will leave the weary traveller, relaxed, rejuvenated and eager to return again.

Activities for families, couples and individual travellers in the area are many and varied, ranging from golf, fishing, mountain climbing, hiking, walking, cycling and pony riding to water-based activities like swimming, surfing, kayaking and diving to name but a few.

Buttermilk Lodge is a purpose built bed and breakfast located just a few minutes from the town of Clifden, Connemara in County Galway.


Buttermilk Lodge offers 11 modern and cosy en suite guest bedrooms, each with its own private shower room, some with full bathtubs as well.

It is the ideal base for touring the West of Ireland and taking part in the many activities the area has to offer. Guests staying with us have complimentary access to the adjoining Heritage Centre - learn the history of Connemara and the farming traditions of the area. 

Take a stroll through the farm and meet the donkeys or the Connemara Ponies. Spot might even tag along as your tour guide. Admire the views of Roundstone Bog with it's hundreds of lakes sparkling in the distance or the majestic Twelve Bens just over the hill. We offer a breakfast menu with a selection of hot and cold dishes. Home baking is a speciality here and from fresh scones to Poitin Cake there will surely be something to tempt you. Where possible we try and source our products locally. We also serve dinner on request but kindly request that it is booked by 12 midday. 

There is also a good selection of places to eat out locally or some great local producers than can supply you ingredients to make a delicious picnic.
