The Riverside at Aymestrey, Aymestrey, Leominster, Herefordshire

The Riverside at Aymestrey, Aymestrey, Leominster, Herefordshire

The Riverside at Aymestrey is a charming 16th Century traditional inn located on the southern edge of Mortimer Forest near Leominster in Herefordshire. Surrounded by rolling countryside and the peaceful River Lugg, the inn offers a relaxing rural escape while retaining the character and warmth of a historic English inn.

Each of the rooms is individually furnished, with several featuring original 400-year-old beams embedded within the walls. The spacious suites provide extra comfort, each with its own sitting room and en suite bedroom. The Hayloft suite overlooks the river and opens directly onto the ornamental terrace gardens, which in turn look out across the valley. The Stable suite opens onto the courtyard and is particularly well suited for guests with reduced mobility. Rooms overlooking the River Lugg and the surrounding Aymestrey countryside also include modern comforts such as flat-screen televisions, Noble Isle toiletries and homemade biscuits.

Breakfast at The Riverside is always freshly cooked to order using locally sourced ingredients wherever possible. Freshly laid eggs from the village are a key ingredient in the kitchen’s much-loved scrambled eggs, reflecting the inn’s commitment to quality and local produce.

The bar and restaurant have been thoughtfully maintained in a traditional style, with log fires, candlelight, hops, oak beams, brick and stone creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere. When the weather allows, guests can enjoy dining beside the river or in the terrace garden, while a stroll around the kitchen garden offers a glimpse of some of the ingredients used in the kitchen. The bar serves hand-pulled real ales from Cleobury Mortimer and Stoke Lacey, along with cider sourced from Tenbury Wells and Leominster.

The inn proudly supports local producers from farms and specialist suppliers across North Herefordshire, the Welsh Border and South Shropshire. The kitchen team regularly forage in nearby meadows, hedgerows and along the riverbank for seasonal ingredients such as wild garlic, elderflower and nettles, making the most of what the surrounding countryside naturally provides.

For those looking to explore the area, there is an excellent selection of circular walks ranging from three to fifteen miles. One of the most popular routes takes walkers to an Iron Age hill fort before continuing on to Croft Castle, a historic estate with over 1,000 years of history. More adventurous visitors can walk from Ludlow to Kington over two or three days, taking in some of the most spectacular scenery in Herefordshire.

With The Riverside at Aymestrey as a base, visitors can also explore the Black and White Village Trail, nearby towns such as Ludlow and Hereford, and a wide range of attractions including historic houses and gardens, heritage sites, breweries, cider presses, cheesemakers, visitor centres and country parks. Whether visiting for relaxation, walking or discovering the rich heritage of the region, The Riverside offers an ideal place to stay in the heart of the Herefordshire countryside.
