The Hill on The Wall, Gilsland, Brampton, Cumbria, Hadrian's Wall

In an outstanding hilltop location overlooking the Irthing Valley and just 300 yards from the Hadrian's Wall National Trail at Birdoswald in Cumbria, this listed 16th century fortified farmhouse, or 'bastle', has three letting rooms which are offered for bed & breakfast.

All are ensuite or with a private bathroom and there is a lounge and library for guests. All bedrooms are named after personalities of the Roman era.

''Hadrian's Retreat' and 'Caligula's Chamber' are large spacious rooms with superb views of The Wall. There is also 'Flavian's Folly' - a downstairs twin room in pine.

'The Long Room', with its log fire and four foot thick walls is a cosy lounge for the use of guests.

The Dining Room contains a large pine table made from the wood of a 17th-century mill.
